Womens Varsity falls short versus St. Margaret's, 17-20
The final home game for SMCHS turned out to be a thriller!! The crowd was loud and supportive of the girls' effort to carry the game into overtime. The team played its best game of the season to honor the seniors' last home game.

The Lady Eagles nearly beat St. Margarets Tuesday night. With a final score of 20-17 in double overtime, it was anyone’s game. St. Margarets jumped out to a quick lead, Goalie; Lindsay Garn (#30) made 9 saves in the first half to keep the game close. Madelin Williams, #16, scored first for SMCHS, and ended up with 4 goals for the game. Brianne Richards (#12) also scored 4 goals with some hard, high shots in front of the net. Cassie Mazolewski (#8) led the scoring with 5 goals and 1 assist, showing her scoring skill rushing from behind the net. Maddie Holloway (#1) and Julia Wisch (#11) each scored one goal.
The Eagles scored early in the second half to set an aggressive pace. SMCHS tied the game 15 - 15 late in the game when Erika Hanson (#21) picked off an errant pass from the Tartan's goalie to square the match to be settled in overtime. SM took its first lead of the game 17 – 16. A possible Santa Margarita upset win faded when the Tartans leading scorer managed to get open in front of the net tie the game with 12 seconds remaining. St. Margarets scored 3 goals in the second overtime and killed the clock with outside passing to finally take the win, 20-17.

What a great game and Congratulations Seniors!!!

Mens Varsity Eagles fall to Amador Valley, 12-13
By Michael Carnow
WSL California Correspondent

SANTEE, Calif. – Saturday night’s Santana Spring Classic championship game wasn’t just being played for a title.

NorCal vs. SoCal bragging rights were also on the line.

Senior attackman Kyle Riddle scored a game-high eight goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to lead CIF-North Coast Section representative Amador Valley to a 13-12 victory over Santa Margarita Catholic of the CIF-Southern Section in a thrilling conclusion to the third-annual event.

With the victory, the Dons (11-2) won their second straight Santana Spring Classic title.

“It’s always awesome to get that championship win,” Riddle said. “We came down and just wanted to show our pride. We wanted to take it to them and show everyone how it’s done in NorCal.”

Sophomore attackman Mitch Flaherty registered four points on two goals and two assists, junior attackman Kevin Busch added two points on one goal and one assist and junior attackman Pace Cranney and junior middie Matt Inderbitzen both scored once to help Amador Valley win its fifth straight.

Defensively, Dons senior goalie Daniel Sayles and junior goalie Chris DeLuca combined to save 10 shots.

Amador Valley used an early four-goal run to take control, and the Dons defense held on just long enough to dash Santa Margarita’s hopes of a late comeback.

“We are just relieved that we could hold on against an excellent ball club,” Amador Valley head coach Rory Manley said. “Santa Margarita fought hard all game, but we couldn’t be more proud of our guys for hanging in there against a ferocious defense.”

In a losing effort, Vermont-bound senior attackman Jack Cranston registered a team-high eight points on six goals and two assists, senior attackman Justin Gabriel added two goals and senior attackman Ryan Parent had two points on one goal and one assist. Junior middies Thomas Bridges and Chris Fox and sophomore middie Adam Enochs all scored once for the Eagles (10-3), who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Cranston and Fisher combined to win 22 of the game’s 29 face-offs, but the extra possession did not translate into more goals, and 17 first-half turnovers came back to haunt Santa Margarita.

Riddle scored all four of Amador Valley’s first-quarter goals and capped the Dons’ initial run with 2:07 left to put his team up 4-1.

Cranston stopped the bleeding after he ripped a shot top left with 8:10 to play in the second quarter to put the Eagles within two at 4-2. But Amador Valley scored four of the next six goals and headed into halftime with an 8-4 lead.

Santa Margarita looked like a new team in the second half. The Eagles scored six of the next eight goals, and Cranston capped a late three-goal surge when he drove from the top of the box and ripped a shot bottom left with 10:54 remaining in the fourth quarter to knot it at 10-10.

Riddle scored his second goal of the quarter after Santa Margarita freshman goalie Ronnie Pisano came out from the cage to hit him, but Riddle spun off the contact and scored on an open net to put his team up 12-10 with 5:01 left in regulation.

Cranston rallied the Eagles by scoring his third goal of the quarter with 22 seconds to play in regulation and make it 13-12.

Cranston won the ensuing face-off, and Santa Margarita had two shots in the waning moments, but both sailed wide of the goal.

“We played good, but they are a tough team,” Cranston said. “It was a hard loss either way. Coach told us at halftime that we needed to stop turning the ball over, get some ground balls and make some shots. We did just that, but it was just too little too late.”

No. 3 Santa Margarita rallies to beat St. Margaret's in OT
Cranston scores the tying and winning goals in the Eagles' 8-7 victory.
By TIM BURT
OCVarsity.com

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Santa Margarita's boys lacrosse team capped quite a week Friday night with an 8-7 comeback-victory over St. Margaret's in sudden-death overtime at St. Margaret's.

The victory puts the No. 3 ranked Eagles alone at the top of the Trinity League with a 5-0 record.

“We had a heck of a week,” Santa Margarita coach Chris Driggs said. “We beat JSerra for the first time in our program's history and we beat St. Margaret's for the first time, and our kids are really believing in themselves.

“They got a ton of heart, their work ethic has been unbelievable and they've really come a long way.”

St. Margaret's (5-3, 4-2), ranked sixth in the county, held a 7-4 lead early in the fourth quarter before Santa Margarita (8-1 overall) tied the match on a goal by senior attack man Jack Cranston with less than a minute left in regulation.

Cranston then scored the game-winner on an assist from Justin Gabriel two minutes into the four-minute overtime.

“Jack Cranston is the type of guy that, when the game is tied, who do you want to get the ball to?,” Driggs said. “Jack Cranston is the guy, he wants the ball and he savors those moments and he finished when he needed to a couple times.”

It was one of five goals for Cranston. Reiley Higgins, Ryan Richards and Chris Fox also scored goals for Santa Margarita. Ryan Curran had two assists for the Eagles.

Freshman goalie Ronnie Pisano had 17 saves for the Eagles.

Eagles Lacrosse Described as Rising SoCal Program
The following is an article that appeared on Lax Power entitled "The Great Debate: The Next Hotbed of Lacrosse". The article discusses the explosion of growth around the country and where the next hotbed may be located. One author describes California as the next hot bed and goes on to state the Eagles Lacrosse program as one of the rising Elite in Southern California. Enjoy the read!

By Brett Manney and Ryan Rohde

It's no secret now that lacrosse is the nation's fastest growing sport. New programs are starting up everywhere from Oregon to Alabama and in between, and more states are now sanctioning the sport such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and South Carolina. With current lacrosse hotbeds including Long Island, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, correspondents Brett Manney and Ryan Rohde debate which region will be next to join the list.

Brett: Lacrosse has been growing immensely out West, and I envision the great state of California as the next hotbed. The Golden State is catching up to its East Coast counterparts and it's evident when I travel to the Silicon Valley region every weekend as a member of the San Jose Stealth. Furthermore, I have attended clinics in Pleasanton and Scotts Valley, where the age of participants ranges from 7 to 17. Now in California, kids are playing just as early as the traditional lacrosse regions. Over time, it will only continue to grow.

Ryan: Although California is a good choice, I believe that the southern states are the next hotbed area for lacrosse, with Florida leading the charge. I include South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and even Alabama in the discussion. Hands down, the best team in the region is St. Andrews out of Boca Raton, FL. Let's disregard their domination of in-state opponents for the past decade and look at some of its out-of-state scores. Last season, the Scots beat Boys' Latin, 7-6, and lost to McDonogh, 7-5. In 2007, they lost to Boys' Latin, 8-5, fell to Episcopal, 6-5, lost to Cold Spring Harbor, 8-5, and beat McDonogh, 13-10. That's pretty impressive for any team, let alone a squad from South Florida.

Brett: Ryan, you make some valid points with St. Andrews, but California has talent oozing all over the state, not just with one team. Granted, California is much larger than Florida, but look at this year's recruits for example: Will Fredericks (Loyola), Billy Mattimore (Bucknell), Spencer Peterson (Duke), Carlton Fisher (Lehigh) and Noah Molnar (Lehigh). Three of the players (Mattimore, Fredericks, and Fisher) attend St. Ignatius Prep located outside of San Francisco. Soon, Southern California should catch up with the north and its athletic powers like Mater Dei, Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita Catholic.

Additionally, California always produces some of the best high school teams in the country, whether it's baseball, basketball or soccer. I believe lacrosse will flourish because athletes are able to practice outside for 12 months of the year. On the East Coast, players are limited in the winter months because of the weather, except in a few states like Florida. In due time, all indications point towards California being the next hotbed.

Ryan: The Southern Region can play year-round, too. In most states, the season begins in February. Meanwhile, the south produces great athletes as well, and colleges are taking notice. Lee Coppersmith (Hopkins), Matt Leighty (Hopkins), Jesse Barnhardt (Maryland) all hail from the state of Florida. Plus, Chase Cararro (Denver) is from Kentucky and TJ Kemp (UNC) is from Tennessee. That's just a handful of the recruits coming out of the south. Look at Neal Hicks, a junior at the University of Notre Dame. He's a native of Atlanta, Georgia and is currently leading the third-ranked team in the nation in points.

The state associations are beginning to realize the potential of the game, too. South Carolina just sanctioned lacrosse as a state sport, and Tennessee sanctioned it two years ago. The sport has grown 280 percent nationwide in the past decade, and in South Carolina, lacrosse has grown from six teams in 2001 to 28 in 2009. I know that 28 teams isn't a lot, but you can already see the growth taking shape, and this is happening in every state across the region.

Brett: Solid points Ryan, but I think California will continue to grow even more with the addition of many former lacrosse players residing in the Golden State. For example, Coronado -- which recently upset St. Ignatius Prep -- is coached by former pro lacrosse player and Notre Dame standout Alex Cade. Many former Division I players are coaching at the high school level. This will provide the kids with more experience and knowledge than a coach who has barely played the game.

In 2000, California had 40 high school teams. In 2007, there were 173, with more schools are adding the sport every year. The state is known for its great athletic programs and lacrosse is surely to be the next one added to the list.

Ryan: But the south has an endless amount of athletes. An increasing amount of football players are beginning to realize their potential in lacrosse, not only to help them on the gridiron, but as a possible option for college as well. College coaches want athletes first and lacrosse players second.

Secondly, the facilities are top of the line. The southern states are crazy about high school football. The facilities that these schools build for their football programs rival most colleges. During the offseason, lacrosse players can lift in their program's state-of-the-art weight room, train with the high-caliber strength and conditioning coach, and then come spring time, they can play in beautiful football stadiums. The allure of playing lacrosse as a primary sport or just as a secondary sport in the spring is undeniable. All of these factors combined make the south a serious hotbed contender.

Brett Manney was a four-year varsity lacrosse player at the University of Delaware before graduating in 2008. Ryan Rohde won three national championships this decade as a member of the Salisbury Sea Gulls. Both are correspondents for LaxPower.

Santa Margarita boys lacrosse tops JSerra
Eagles improve to 4-0 in league, prepare for next challenge from St. Margaret's.
BY TIM BURT
Ocvarsity.com

Santa Margarita's boys lacrosse team, ranked No. 3 in the county, is getting ready to take on another of the county's top teams on Friday night.

The Eagles will face No. 6 St. Margaret's Friday at 6 p.m. at St. Margaret's.

Santa Margarita improved its Trinity League record to 4-0 with a 13-8 victory over No. 5 JSerra Tuesday evening at Santa Margarita.

"Any time you schedule Santa Margarita vs. JSerra in any sport it is going to be a battle," Santa Margarita Coach Chris Driggs said. "These kids grew up together. Some of them are neighbors and former classmates. I have coached many of the JSerra kids at the youth and club level. There was more to this game than others we play because of all the dynamics involved.

"To win this game felt great and I am extremely proud of our team. This was a very big win for the Santa Margarita lacrosse community."

JSerra held a 6-5 lead at halftime but Santa Margarita broke the match open with six goals in the fourth quarter.

Senior attack men Justin Gabriel and Ryan Parent had three goals each to lead the Eagles. Senior attack man Jack Cranston added two goals and three assists for Santa Margarita.

Freshman goalie Ronnie Pisano had 16 saves for Santa Margarita.

JSerra was led by senior attack men Eric Evans and Kyle Snyder, who had three goals each.

"Each and every guy played their part in this win," Driggs said. "We never quit, especially when we went down 3-0 in the first minute and a half of the game and down by one point at half. Our kids showed poise. They showed a will to win, and a will to get better as the game progressed – we took over in the fourth quarter with six goals scored against their one."

But Driggs said the Eagles must now focus on St. Margaret's.

"Like anything else, this game is history and we have to come out working hard in practice to prepare for St. Margaret's," he said.
